Is Open Source Software as Reliable as Commercial Software?
Just like commercial software, the quality of open source software runs the gamut. With commercial software the adage of “you get what you pay for” tends to hold true. But, what about free open source software? According to Netcraft, the free open source Apache Web Server is the most popular web server software in the world. Apache holds a little over 53% of the market shares (as of January 2010) . The next competitor is Microsoft IIS with just over 24%. Two other open source products make the list accounting for about an additional 8% of the market share. For Netcraft’s survey of the million busiest sites the market share of open source is even higher – over 71% – while Microsoft’s IIS market share drops to about 17%. Market share doesn’t measure reliability, but if 71% of the world’s busiest web sites trust an open source product to serve their content, I think it’s safe to say that it’s earned the trust of the Internet powerhouses out there.
